Prof. Dr. Tugba Boyunegmez Tumer

Tugba Boyunegmez Tumer is a full Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkiye. She earned her MSc and PhD degrees from Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkiye, in 2004 and 2009, respectively. In 2013 and 2014, she served as a postdoctoral fellow at the NIH-funded International Research Training Center for Botanicals and Metabolic Syndrome at Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. Upon returning to Turkiye, Dr. Tumer joined Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, where she established a research team dedicated to investigating the molecular mechanisms and effects of natural product-derived and synthetic small molecules on chronic inflammatory conditions. Her work focuses on developing pharmacological lead compounds for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, particularly cancer and inflammation. Her laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating in vitro and in vivo assays, multi-omic tools, as well as in silico computational modeling and ADMET analyses to facilitate rational lead discovery.

Dr. Tumer’s research has been supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and the Health Institutes of Turkiye (TUSEB) under the Ministry of Health. She has held several administrative positions, including serving as a University Executive Board Member (2021–2024), a Member of the Senate (2021–2024), and the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (2021–2024) at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University. Additionally, she contributed as a Scientific Commissioner for the university's Scientific Research Coordination Unit (2020-2023). Recently, Dr. Tumer was awarded the prestigious Stanislaw ULAM Program by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA). Her awarded research project focuses on investigating the role of the Pin1-Nrf2-Keap1 axis in premature senescence and physiological aging of endothelial cells. This project will be conducted at the Department of Medical Biotechnology, Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland.
